Default Let's Learn Wahjong

Sticky Sticky Sticky

Having problems to count and estimate how many tais you have? Read through this page!!!! Currently I am still working on it
无法预测手中有多少(台),读下去 行了,有必要翻译,请通知一声,简 繁体都能

Notice Board
Regardless how many hundreds tais you get, the maximum is 15 tais in Wahjong
无论你赢取多少(台),15(台)是极 限

How to Win?
Wahjong (Mahjong) is a game for four players. Wahjong involves skill, strategy, and calculation, as well as a certain degree of luck. In the game, each player is dealt thirteen tiles in a hand. On their turn, players draw a tile and discard one, with the goal of making four melds and one pair(四个副顺子,刻子或杠子和一对同 的牌). Winning comes "on the draw" by drawing a new or taking discarded tile from opponents that completes the hand. Thus, a winning hand actually contains fourteen tiles.

What is Melds?
Melds consist of
1)Pong - a set of three identical tiles
2)Kong - a set of four identical tiles
3)Shang/Sheung (Chi/Chow) - three suited tiles in sequence

What is Pair?
Pair is any two identical tiles

What is Tai?
A minimum requirement of points you must achieve aside from scoring 4 melds and 1 pair

How to count your tais?

First, check and confirm your seat/wind

1= East Wind (東, dōng east)

2= South Wind (南, nán south)

3= West Wind (西, xī west)

4= North Wind (北, běi north)

Second, check your front(tiles set in front of your hand)

(1)If you have no flower tiles at all.............................................(N o Flower)+1 tai
if you never have any tiles in front of your hand..........................(Clear Front)+1 tai extra

(2)If you have flowers,
for every flowers that have number that is same as your wind........(Own Flower)+1 tai each
for every flowers that have number different as your wind......(Opponent Flower)+0 tai
if you complete all 4 flowers 1 to 4............................................(Flow er Set)+1 tai extra
if you complete all 4 seasons 1 to 4...........................................(Flowe r Set)+1 tai extra

(3)In Singapore version, if you have animals tiles................................(Animal)+1 tai each
reminder : +1 tai for Clear front is forfeited if you have animals tiles

Third, check if you have any pong/kong of dragon tiles

for every single pong/kong of dragon....................................(Pong of Dragon)+1 tai each
must be pong out, not in hand

Fourth, check how you win the game
(1)If you win by a self-drawn tile.............................................. ...(Self Draw)+1 tai
(2)If you win by taking discarded tile from opponents.........................(Coward)+0 tai
(3)If you win by robbing a player's tile......................................(Robbing Kong)+1 tai
You can rob a tile when a player has an exposed Pung, draws the fourth tile and is trying to Kong using the fourth tile

Fifth, check your chance wind and chance round

Chance wind - check the little tile beside your hand, any melds with the same tile +1 tai

Chance round - check who is holding the dice, the person holding it is east东, the person next to him/her (clockwise) is south南, followed by west西 and north北 (clockwise), if you have any melds that is same as your wind, +1 tai

Finally, check whether you have special hand

Heavenly Hand(天胡) - wins the match on the first turn, possible to dealer only

Earthly Hand(地胡) - win the match on taking the 1st discard by the dealer
OR by self-drawn tile by non-dealer 1st turn (before a pung, chow or kong is declared)

Thirteen terminal(十三么) - win the match by having 13 different tiles, must include four wind tiles, 3 dragon tile, one bamboo stick, nine bamboo sticks, one circle, nine circles, one character, nine characters, and a pair of tiles, since 14 tiles is maximum, the pair must be one of the tile mentioned

All Pong (碰碰胡) - the winning hand must have 4 pong and 1 pair

All Chow (小平胡) - the winning hand must have 4 chow/shang and 1 pair

Sequence Hand / Ping Hu (平胡) - the winning hand must have 4 chow and 1 pair without having any flowers and animals, in addition, the winning player has to be waiting for at least 2 different tiles in order to claim discarded tile to win, unless he self-draw the tile
*In Sequence Hand / Ping Hu (平胡), All Chow (小平胡) is forfeited

Pure Honors (字一色) - the winning hand must consist of all honor tiles (wind and dragon tiles)

Pure Suit (清一色) - the winning hand must have only tiles from one suit, either bamboo, character or circle

Mixed Suit (混一色) - the winning hand must have only honor tiles and tiles from one suit only

Big 3 Dragons (大三元) - the winning hand contains melds of all 3 dragons tiles

Little 3 Dragons (小三元) - the winning hand contains melds of 2 dragons tiles and 1 pair of dragon tiles

Big 4 Winds (大四喜) - the winning hand contains melds of all 4 winds tiles
*In Big 4 Winds (大四喜), All Pong (碰碰胡) and Little 4 Winds (小四喜) is forfeited

Little 4 Winds (小四喜)
- the winning hand contains melds of 3 winds tiles and 1 pair of wind tiles

Seven Consecutive Pairs (连七对) - the winning hand consists of seven consecutive pairs of same suit
*In Seven Consecutive Pairs (连七对), Pure Suit (清一色) and Seven Pairs (七小对) is forfeited

Seven Pairs (七小对) - the winning hand consists of any seven pairs

Nine Gates (九莲宝灯) - the winning hand must have 9 tiles that the player can win with, e.g. 1112345678999 of one particular suited tiles
*In Nine Gates (九莲宝灯), Pure Suit (清一色) is forfeited

Pure Terminals (清老头/清幺九) - the winning hand consists of 1 and 9 of any suited tiles only
*In Pure Terminals (清老头/清幺九), All Pong (碰碰胡) is forfeited

Hidden Treasures (四暗刻) - the winning hand must have 4 pong and 1 pair and never claim any discards before in the particular match
*Hidden Treasures (四暗刻), All Pong (碰碰胡) is forfeited

Hence Seven Pairs (七小对), Seven Consecutive Pairs (连七对) and Thirteen terminal(十三么) are the non-standard winning hand

In Wahjong All Pong (碰碰胡) is not forfeited in any case

Common Questions

Why I cannot Shang/Sheung?
Shang may only be declared off the discard of the player on the left. The only exception is when the player needs that tile to form a Sheung to win

Nothing happened after I Shang/Sheung O_o?
Wait a few seconds, priority is to Pong and Kong

Why I can't win after completing 4 Melds and 1 Pair/Eye?
You do not have enough tai

I was supposed to win by declaring off the discard, but how come my opponent won?
You are not fast enough, you should declare it earlier, be prepared next time

Should I Kong or Pong?
Once a Kong is formed, it cannot be split up, i.e., to use one tile as part of a Chow, and thus, it may be advantageous not to immediately declare a Kong, you can save one tile

Will Kong results in imbalance of tiles? 小相公? 大相公?
No, after Kong, the player must draw an extra tile from the back end of the wall

How to conceal my Kong?
Not possible in wahjong

I accidentally threw a wrong tile! How?
Better luck next round

What is 0 Coward (鸡胡)?
In Wahjong, coward is a winning by taking a discarded tile from opponents

Frequently Asked Questions originally posted by admin

What is the maximum points one can score in a match?
The maximum points/tai/fan/hand is capped at 15.

Does Wahjong follow Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan or China mahjong rules?
Wahjong generally implements rules from Singapore and Hong Kong Mahjong, depending on the mode chosen, but not in its entirety as there are minute differences between everyone's rules.

What happens when a player leaves the match halfway?
The player gets a gold/experience penalty, and automatically discards tiles that he draws in subsequent rounds.

OMG.. My mum is overtaking me in Wahjong rankings!! How?
err.. play more and overtake her?

Can my dad play Viwawa as well?
Why not? But only if mommy allows.
