Use of pots is integral to the game. Nobody is obliged to not use pots if you request/demand for it. It is up to you if you decide not to use pots, but you cannot stop others from using it. It is OK to use pots.

For topic starter, you don't have to know that your opponent is using pots to decide if you want to use it yourself. Just use when necessary.
