Today someone had a hint of sarcasm when he said that I was a level 26 scolding some level seventy-something at the bridge table. I was playing at that table for quite awhile, and i do quite remember the hand. Wall of text for people who are interested: So the bidder was opposite with a strong balanced hand (I don't recall in detail but it was probably a 2NT rebid of 4) So he called 4 hearts with AK10xx of hearts and called me as his partner. Very fortunately, we had a side suit to run. And very fortunately, one of the opponents keep playing into a ruffing finesse. So After 2 ruffing finesses, He had AK hearts left, I was out and the Left Hand Opp (with respect to me) had probably 1/2 hearts left. Okay so with winners in other suits, he kept playing the side suits to 'drain' out other people's trump because we're slightly short in them. But at that point in time, 2 (from left hand opp) + 2 (from me) +1 (a ruff on a club winner by right hand opp) and 2 (from bidder) was out. and bidder has 2 trumps in hand. in other words. there are 4 more trumps at large and given a good break, these 4 trumps could break 2-1-1, 2-0-2 or 3-1-0. On a bad break, it would break 4-0-0. However, there's really no need to keep the trumps till last because.... he doesn't really need to trump anything. Because we more or less got the other suits covered (in terms of high cards) and we don't really need the trump to trump anything because we're not weak or short in anymore suits. The one that we're weak/short in has already finished running in that 2 ruffing finesses. So at the end of the game I asked him why he didn't wanted to draw trump and told him that he should take into account that even when he has a strong hand with his side suit as AKQ spades, someone might have run out on that spades on his K and his Q will no longer be a winner. But apparently, the response I received was that the bidder had always done it like that and it had always worked. He just needed 3 tricks from the partner and that's it. But if you're throwing your tricks away like that, not even 5 tricks from the partner can cover for it. </wall of text> Anyways 1. I wasn't telling him off or something. I was merely asking a question. 2. i hope people don't judge lower levels by their levels but instead pay attention to their skills more. I mean the only reason that you're higher levelled is you spent a lot of time playing on this site, that's why your experience points add up. I hope some people can know that a failed contract due to your opponents paying attention to your discards is different from a failed contract due to a clumsy bid, luck, or misdiscards on the partner's part. Next time you hear people saying 'Ah, so close! We might have made it.' You might want to think that the opponents had kept the right last card all along and it's kinda already set that you're gonna lose, so it might appear as close as it is.
