(Your partnership is floating) Reasons: -Your partner is fixed. So no silliness from a **** who bid 3S with only 5 lousy spades, and you happen to be the partner, or someone out for revenge. -Players bid and make the best contract available. When I was teaching my bridge classes, everyone thought that 7NT is impossible, until I told them how. And that's with a king missing (35 points between partners needed, although it is possible to make 7NT with other hands). -It's you vs the entire world. Not you vs the other 3 players. Big deal if you make 2S+4 when everyone makes 6S. You just end up at the bottom of the leader board. -Unlike floating bridge, contract bridge is actually a game which the world plays on an international level. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contract_bridge) -While floating bridge maybe a great game among friends, the level of interaction is just different seeing as this is online. You can't smack your friend with a pillow online because he made the wrong contract. -Contract bridge IS rather common in Singapore, should one think otherwise. There are a fair amount of clubs in CCs, with the main club in Bishan. Also, most (if not all) JCs' chess/mental sports club has a contract bridge division, with inter-JC competitions held once a year. Both NUS and NTU also have a contract bridge club. While I do not deny that floating bridge is a great game by it's own right, I do think that Contract bridge is a lot better, and should be what's being played in Viwawa.

erm...
if it's 10 consecutive wins in 24 matches (15 wins n 9 losses) means his 9 losses are pretty much together too?

Not hard to string 10 wins when you're playing with your usual contract bridge partner. Just have to look out for the right signals and take notice of the bidding.
And I don't count my stats. Didn't even realise I strung 10 wins in a row. Mere numbers don't mean too much to me.

i've always thought that it was very nice to have floating bridge on viwawa...you can't find it anywhere else on the net.
plenty of less enlightened people like me enjoy floating bridge=P i hope and believe that viwawa will keep it. that said, an option for contract bridge would of course be nice, but i suppose we have to take into account the fact that the developers are probably more interested in creating different games. and one can find contract bridge on other gaming sites like yahoo anyway. it seems a very viwawa thing to want to be different.

I think largely subjective as to which version ppl prefers.
For contract bridge, it seems you ald noe who is ur partner - e one sitting across u. In that sense, floating bridge seems more fun in that there is a sense of mystery, like the unknown partner trying to help unseemingly, and other players trying to convince the bidder that they are his partner etc.. And the part where one try to win bid and call for the right partner, be it a misfortune (Sometimes), a tactic (Kamikaze), an accident (Call wrong partner) or a success (Ownage).. I suppose it's like mahjong, where there are Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, U.S and Singapore style, we can discuss until the cow comes home, but it's still subjective as to which is more enjoyed. I do not mind a new type of bridge though, seems it has its fun points too! Hahaz.. Maybe there can be diff channels for diff types of bridge etc, depends on the programmer, 辛苦你了! Heez..

yeap i agree with honey_milktea and shi_san_yeow.
personally i prefer floating bridge over contract as it includes the element of mystery and deduction. for contract, if you're partner of winning bidder, den you're outta the game for that round basically. ;P wow bridge teacher... *bows*

haha both types of bridge haf their "fun-ness" in the sense..
for floating its being mentioned above shi san yeow and honey milktea.. for contract wise rite.. 1 is able to achieve lk 5 or 6 NT quite easily and tt gifs e sense of achievement or satisfaction i feel.. yup agree w falcon tt 1 who wins 6S is definitely better den 1 who wins 2S+4.. yup bt to implement in vww here mite not b a gd idea coz contract reqs a gr8 partnership n its not rlly easy to achieve tt here coz ppl keep changing partners..

Agree with NightFalcon. Contract bridge is all about SKILL, simply because it requires less luck, more analysis on cards, strength, distribution, AND a lot more emphasis on strategy (to play the finesse, or NOT to play the finesse etc). There's no two ways about it. There's nothing to argue about facts. It's just a fact contract bridge is about skill, while floating bridge is about luck.

i would say floating bridge is like checker while contract bridge is like chess.
while games like contract bridge or chess are more internationally recognised and required more skills and knowledge, games like checker and contract bridge are more easier to learn and play, thus may be considered so called more 'fun'. (just look at the numbers who play checkmate to prove my point) the aim of the site is to encourage more people to play so the games created is those that more people will want to play. having said that, i'm interested to learn contract bridge but it seems difficult to play:funk

You just need practice. Heaps of it. If you're studying and interested in playing contract bridge, just check with your school's chess club divisions. I'm sure they're happy to teach anyone who's willing to learn. Hell, it's hard enough getting people to play contract bridge, much less make a team.

it's quite true, but contract bridge can be found all over the net, while i haven't found many others which provide floating bridge. it's an alternative i guess, and if you're craving for contract, why not just pop over to some other website to play it there?
